UPDATED 6/20/08:
---Just posted: shots from our trip to Europe. It's a nice change to be looking at photos of something other than music.

We started in Barcelona, and were there for about two and a half days. From there, we got on a cruise that went to Cannes & St. Paul-de-Vence, Florence, and Rome.

Barcelona was just a vibrant city - I really liked the architecture, but after a few days, I was a little sick of the food. You can only eat so much tapas.

I didn't think I'd enjoy Cannes, but I really dug it. Before we went, I had this picture of Hilton Head, SC in my mind, and it really wasn't like that at all. We were there duing the film festival (but didn't see any famous people), so I'd like to go back when it's a "normal" weekend.

---I don't have enough room to write what I think of Florence, so I'll just say I'm ready to move there, like tomorrow. One can't help but be inspired by this phenomenal city. I was staggered by the beauty of the city, and am definitely going to make it back at some point to spend more time there.

Rome, however - not a fan. I found it noisy, dirty, and overall unpleasant. I have never had such a hard time navigating a city in my life. Granted, we weren't there long enough to get a good enough grasp of the city - I think you really need at least a week. We got lost as hell, which didn't help.

And then, it started to pour, which sucks in general but especially sucks when you have expensive camera gear. So I bought an umbrella from some dude on the street for five Euro, which held up until it REALLY started to pour and then started to leak. I guess serves me right for pinning my hopes on an umbrella that was probably made from construction paper or something.

So, Rome will get a second chance in the future, but for now, it's not my friend.

---Still wading through all of these Beale Street Music Festival shots...fortunately for my workload, we haven't had much music in Memphis lately so I've got the time without building up a bigger pile of files to edit.

Here are shots from Aretha Franklin and Michael Franti & Spearhead, both on Sunday, May 4. Aretha was great - my first time seeing her, and now I can say that I have! She's still got the best voice, and I was pleased to have the opportunity to hear her belt out all those songs I've only heard on the radio for so long.

FrantiSpearhead - well, what can I say. Right now he's my idol. From his catchy songs to the message in them, he's the man. His set was awesome as usual, and the crowd ate it up. He's the consumate front man, and I can't help but smile while watching him.

His setlist included a ton of stuff from Yell Fire! and quite a few new songs that I wasn't familiar with that I'm guessing will be on the forthcoming album.

Back from Europe (those photos here for those interested), and trying to finish up the stuff from Beale Street Music Festival theme: here are the photos from Santana's set on Saturday, 5/3/08.

Honestly, I didn't expect much out of Santana. Everything he's put out in the past five or so years has been somewhat tainted by the pop musicians all over his CD. It's not horrible to listen to, but still, not quite on par with any of his old stuff.

I was, in a word, blown away by his set. He was MUCH, MUCH better than I anticipated, and his guitar playing was infinitely better than anything he's recorded in the studio of late. It's almost like the pop stars he recruits to guest with him are holding him back.

Umphreys I was excited to hear that the Black Crowes would be the band that closed 2008 Beale Street Music Festival on May 4. They had played Mud Island Amphitheatre in October with guitarist Paul Stacey, and this time, they had a new guy playing alongside Rich Robinson.

Luther Dickinson is now on lead, and what he brings to the table is just an amazing fit for what the Crowes are doing.

Their album Warpaint is one of the best of their catalog, and Luther on guitar has a lot to do with the new sound.

This is a band that has so much potential, if they can just keep it together; in-fighting has always been the Crowes' weak spot.

Enjoy,
