Dr. Dog, 5/5/12

Dr. Dog | Beale Street Music Festival
Memphis, TN | May 5, 2012

Foolishly, the organizers of Beale Street Music Festival scheduled Dr. Dog at the same time as Cold War Kids, so I was forced to make a choice. The last time I saw Cold War Kids, I didn’t really feel it, so to Dr. Dog I went, and I’m glad I did.

I saw Dr. Dog a few months back at Minglewood Hall – it was a good show, but at the time, I really wasn’t that hip to their music. I had seen them before (opening for the Black Keys at the Young Avenue Deli ages ago), but didn’t know a lot of their music. Since then I’d dug into their stuff a bit, and was pretty primed to see them.

They played a few songs I knew and some newer stuff…I’m not good with song names, so I can’t go too much into that. But, musically, they’re great – their harmonies are stellar, and they write catchy pop tunes. It’s pretty nuts to think that the first time I saw them they were opening for the Keys at THE DELI – a room that maybe holds 300 people. The Keys are now headlining Madison Square Garden.
